My other comments were referring more to the several emails I'd gotten which seemed to suggest that this possible mod somehow represents all that is wrong or forsaken in the world. No offense taken at all in your comment and the technical part of what you wrote is quite helpful. You might have to glue in a hardwood pillow block and experiment to get the height correct but a solid mounted pickup will really make a guitar come alive.BTW,if the cavity is too small, then you definitly need a friend w/a Bridgeport.Personally,I would bail on the idea at that point-but that's just me. I wasn't trying to be judgemental-just curious. As far as mounting the thing goes(this is assuming the cavity is large enough)I'm sure nobody makes a bracket or plate specifically for this particular combination unless the old Emmons way of attachment just happens to line up w/the new pickup or vice-versa.That would be the first thing I'd look at.If you need a new hole, then drill a new hole.If that fails then simply look at how the old pickup is mounted and then look at the new pickup and see what's missing from it.Imagine what the missing part should look like, cut it out of an old door hinge,Telecaster pickguard, old floppy disc case or whatever and put it all together.I personally like the sound of a pickup screwed down tight right into the wood of the deck-like on a Z.B. I certainly wouldn't have thought to do it myself but hey, given the inquiries, I'm almost tempted to try. Without naming names, I'll just say that this idea has apparently occured to far better and more distinguished players than I'll even dream of being.

All I can say (besides the fact that I'm SELLING them and not wanting to do this mod myself.) is that both inquiries about this came from very well respected, non-MSA playing players who are much appreciated on this forum and beyond. It's actually been interesting that I've gotten a few emails suggesting that putting these pickups in an Emmons would be some kind of crime against the steel guitar world.

I've got no clue as to where one could be bought and I'm WAY too much of a mechanical moron to figure out how to make one.

These pickups have no bracket or screw holes attached so I'm assuming some type of mount would have to be bought or made. The mounting bracket was actually a big part of my question. If I were gonna mount a given pickup in a given guitar,I would measure the pickup dimensions and the cavity dimensions and see what I've got.You might find that you have to mill out the cavity and you will almost certainly have to devise a mounting bracket of some sort. That part is simple. As far as the pickup in question,I have a couple of them in a coffee can out on my bench that I removed from my MSA soon after I got it in 1980 because I thought they were the weak link in an otherwise tremendous guitar.I've thought about having someone rewind them and perhaps using them in the future-on what guitar I don't know. What mystifies me is that given Emmons owners preoccupation w/ "That Sound" - and how much pickups contribute to that, what would be gained by changing out the stock pickups? -MJ. Of course, he was not satisfied !!! heck, I have a 1962 Fender 400 with the original pickup in it and think it sounds wonderful !! But, I am certainly in the minority, most of the guys swear by some pickups and think all the rest are junk !!! Just my 2 cents worth !! I liked the sound of his guitar with any of them !!! I could set the amp EQ and get the sound I wanted with any of the 3 pickup.

I did help a local player here install 3 different pickups in his Emmons, I didn't hear any difference in any of them. No, Chris, you are not the ONLY guy who is ignorant on that, I don't know myself !! I have played steel for over 50 years and don't really worry much about pickups !! Anyone out there able to field this one?Īre there really no takers on this? Surely I'm not the ONLY guy too ignorant to know the answer!!!įrom: Kasilof, Alaska **** way up NORTH TO ALASKA When I advertized my MSA Super Sustain pickups for sale, I had two prospective buyers ask if they could be mounted on an Emmons guitar.
